10’s Of Thousands Attend 2012 Von
Nieda Picnic At Pennsylvania Y.C.
Ok, 10’s of thousands did not show up LOL, but close to 300 did
attend. Mother Nature once again tried
to put a damper on our Annual DRYL Von Nieda Picnic but she just couldn’t
hinder the good time that was planned by Von Nieda Chairperson Mike Callahan
and his committee. I guess she knew
that, and she let the heavy stuff go around us.
It rained but not that bad. John
Honer (our newly appointed DRYL Weather Man) and a couple others had their
smart phone weather Doppler system apps working and every now and then would
show me the mostly red, orange, and yellow bands that were coming our way that
was to give us a deluge of rain and high winds – but, we got way less than
expected, and predicted. This weather was
nothing – remember the Von Nieda when Hurricane Hannah visited? That was Mother Nature at her worst and we
played along with her and had a great picnic that year too. This event, like all the DRYL affairs are run
to promote camaraderie, bring everyone together, and strengthen the bonds of
the clubs and its members up and down river.
When it all comes together, and everyone can eat, drink, be merry, and
have a GOOD TIME, it makes for an excellent day no matter what the weather.
I want to say thank you to Suzy & Bill Haldeman (Past
DRYL Queen Astra’s parents) who volunteered to perform for us and were just a
wonderful addition to this year’s picnic – everyone really enjoyed listening,
singing along, and dancing to their music.
The selection of tunes was perfect and put everyone in a party
mood. If you would like to have them out
to your event here is their contact info…

As always, there was plenty to do for the kids. When they weren’t playing in the play area,
running wild on the well manicured lawn, or in the bounce tent, they had fun
with Queen Alex, Past Queen Kaity, and the Princesses who did a great job
keeping the little ones busy. I have to
give thanks to the young ladies for their help with the kids, as they did a
great job.
Walt Shultz gave me day off and took control of the Club
Competition this year and I thank him for that – clubs did battle all afternoon
and once again Bridesburg OC came to win – and they did just that – if it
wasn’t for the always tough, but sweethearts from Pennsylvania YC who won the
Ladies Tug – A - War, BOC would have swept all the events. I can already see the picture at the upcoming
Banquet – a table full of trophies and a bunch of proud smiling BOC Members
faces.
I want to give thanks to everyone who worked for us
especially Mark Brasberger (clam steamer), Chris ‘Spidey’ Beckmann (clam
schucker), Joe Campbell (corn cooker), Mike Smith and Paul Richardson
(grillers), as well as the many who jumped in to relieve and help out. It was a group effort and everything worked
out well.
And lastly, huge thank yous to Anchor YC, Mike Smith (DRYC),
and my wife Mary who showed up early Sunday AM to clean up the grounds and
clubhouse. I am not sure how they were
feeling but my head was fuzzy and my butt was dragging. LOL
Gotta say
the highlight of the day for me was meeting Paul Sr. from OCC ….
